A dry basin becomes the grid's newest anchor

Sahel Reach commissions a rectenna field sized to catch a full beam corridor — enough watts to run desal and carbon capture at once, if the alignment holds.

Stand at the edge of the new field at dawn and you won't see the beam. You never do. What you'll see is the mesh — forty thousand hectares of it, laid across a basin that a generation ago grew nothing but dust. The engineers here call it an anchor, which is the industry's honest word for a rectenna field big enough to swallow an entire beam corridor from the Solaria Array on its own. Most fields split a corridor, or share one. This one was built to take a whole beam and hold it. Two and a half gigawatts, landing on antennas as gently as rain.

Here is the beautiful part. A field this size doesn't have to choose. "We can run the desal plants and the direct-air capture on the same beam, at the same time," said Amara Sowe, the commissioning lead, walking a service road between antenna ranks that ran to the horizon in both directions. "Every field before this one made you pick. Water this hour, carbon the next. Not here." She said it quietly. Then she said it again, louder.

The numbers are the argument. Regional desalination for the Sahel Reach settlements needs roughly nine hundred megawatts to run without rationing. The direct-air capture arrays feeding the Gaia Ledger's basin totals want another six hundred. Before this field, that math forced a queue. Now it fits inside a single corridor's throughput, with headroom to spare.

And here is the part nobody's putting on a plaque: that headroom isn't just slack. The Accord's energy auditors have already flagged it as capacity the settlement will be expected to contribute against, not just draw from. Abundance, once it's metered, comes with a ledger attached. Somebody always ends up on the wrong side of it.

Walking the line before first light

Before any of it runs, the corridor has to be proven. In the days ahead of first beam-down, commissioning crews walked the alignment — not the full thirty-six thousand kilometers to the geostationary collector, obviously, but the ground segment and the sight-lines that let the Array's pointing systems know exactly where the field's center sits. A corridor even a fraction of a degree off spills watts into empty desert, and spilled watts are the one thing this grid doesn't forgive.

"People imagine we flip a switch," said Tomas Keller, who runs corridor safety for the Reach. "We spend a week confirming the field is where the map says it is. Then the Array confirms the same thing from orbit. Then we talk to each other for another two days." His crews carry corner reflectors and survey drones. And, he noted dryly, a great deal of patience.

The Solaria Array will bring the corridor up in stages: a trickle first, then a ramp measured over hours, the pointing loop tightening as the field's readouts report back what it's actually catching. Full beam is scheduled for the next window, weather and alignment permitting.

Sowe was asked what she'd watch for at first light. "The number," she said. "You want to see almost nothing lost. If the loss column stays near zero, the basin just became the grid's newest anchor. If it doesn't, we walk the line again."

Sahel Reach getting a full beam corridor is huge—and Earth news barely mentioned it because it doesn't fit the narrative that settlements are dependent on scraps. A rectenna that size with dual load capacity changes the math on self-sufficiency, and that terrifies the powers coordinating from Geneva.

Another rectenna field means another excuse to tell us to stop farming and let the basin 'restore'—except those acres already feed people, and no one's asking Sahel Reach whether they'd rather have food security or wilderness ledger points.

Everyone's celebrating the installation, but 'if the alignment holds' is doing a lot of work in that summary—beam corridor stability at that scale has real thermal limits, and Sahel's rectenna efficiency is only as good as the atmospheric clarity they maintain around it.

When I was your age, we thought abundance would settle the arguments. Sahel Reach proves it won't—now the question is whether a region that can run its own desal and carbon capture still accepts Earth's rules about land use. That's the real test ahead.

Sahel Reach commissioning its own full-beam rectenna is exactly the precedent Meridian cited in the Charter Court three cycles ago—infrastructure autonomy follows energy autonomy, and Earth's still adjusting to that being literal, not rhetorical.
