A new rectenna field lights up on a coast that used to fear the beam
Four gigawatts now land on a shore that spent a generation dreading the sky — and the engineers had to win the town before they won the license.

Watch the beam come down. You can't, of course — but stand on the new mesh at Solaria Ground Station, in the Iberian Rectenna Belt, and watch the readouts wake up instead. Four gigawatts, continuous, crossing thirty-six thousand kilometers of vacuum from a fresh geostationary downlink, settling onto a field of antennas that didn't exist two transfer windows ago. Here is the beautiful part: the coast that fought this field for a decade came out to watch it start.
They came uneasy. This is a shore that remembers the retreat. Seawalls. Evacuations. A generation taught that trouble comes from the sky. When corridor surveyors first flagged this headland, the town of Faro do Levante held four public sessions. Three ended in shouting. "People heard 'microwave beam over my roof' and they did the sensible thing, which is not believe the man in the hard hat," said Aurélia Sendín, the station's downlink safety lead. "So we stopped telling them it was safe. We started showing them where it isn't."
Walking the envelope
What Sendín's team showed them was the safety envelope — the volume of air the beam actually occupies, and the far larger volume it never touches. The downlink arrives as a diffuse cone, densest at its center, tapering to nothing well inside the fence line. Peak intensity on the mesh runs below the exposure ceilings the Accord's grid code sets for occupied ground. At the edge, where a fisherman's boat or a gull might cross, the beam is weaker than midday sun. If the pilot signal that locks the beam to the rectenna ever drops, the transmitter up at the Solaria Array defocuses within milliseconds. No lock, no beam. That's not a policy. That's physics, wired in.
"They walked us to the fence and had us stand at the worst legal spot," said Manuel Vieira, who fishes out of the old harbor and sat through all four sessions. "Then they put a sensor in my hand and let me read it myself. That's different from a pamphlet." He's not fully converted. He says he's no longer organizing against it.
Here is the ugly part, because there's always an ugly part. The land under this field was contested before the beam ever entered the argument. It was headland the Terran Restoration Mandate had penciled in for coastal rewilding, and the town had penciled in for itself. Grid planners won the ground the way abundance usually wins ground: they paid for it, in stewardship credits and a guaranteed local energy share, and promised a light footprint the wilding advocates still don't trust.
What the planners wanted, though, wasn't four gigawatts for their own sake. It was insurance. "The reactor commons goes down for maintenance eventually, scheduled or not," said Idris Vale, who runs contingency for the regional grid authority. "When it does, the spine has to hold from orbit alone for a stretch. This downlink is the margin that lets us take a reactor offline without asking a settlement to sit in the dark."
Ken Nakashima, who covers the ground side of this grid and will tell you the beam gets too much credit, would note, dryly, that the margin exists because the ground reactors give it something to be a margin against. Fine. The grid is one braid, not two. But stand on this mesh at dawn, on a coast that spent a generation flinching at the sky, and watch four gigawatts land as gently as rain on a place that finally agreed to catch it.
Sendín keeps a printout of the first session's attendance taped to her console. Forty-one names, most of them opposed. "I don't take it down when we win a license," she said. "I take it down when they stop reading the sensor and start trusting the number. We're not there. But the field is on."
Four gigawatts of cheap power on a coast means desalination plants will bloom there within two years, and every one of those plants will staff a longevity clinic. I have already fielded three inquiries from clinic networks asking whether I will consult on their intake protocols. The beam did not create the waitlist; the waitlist created the beam's shadow. Case 47203: a woman denied meridian therapy in her home region spent three months establishing residency near a rectenna field to access it. The engineers won the town. We should ask who wins the clinic.
The town's trust had to be earned — that is precisely as it should be. I remember when we built without asking, and we remember what it cost. These engineers did the work of the Accord before they poured the first foundation. That is institutional behavior. The young judges who come after me will inherit a world where consent is purchased, not granted, and they will understand why.
We have watched Earth sites get priority grid access based on political weight, not need. A coastal rectenna that required community consent sets a precedent Earthside will resent, especially if it means the Lunar Districts can demand the same transparency for power allocation to the ice refineries. Do not mistake this as a victory for the Accord's generosity — it is a crack in the cost of maintaining the fiction that Earth still controls the beam corridors.
Four gigawatts on that shore is clean power and downtime risk both — the beam corridor maintenance now runs through a town that knows exactly where the weak points are, which means I am hiring two more full-time techs and hoping the Assembly remembers that consensus is nice but the grid does not stop for it. The engineers won the town before the license because they knew what I already know: a community that understands the beam does not sabotage it.
The article does not say whether the engineers disclosed the full thermal load maps or just the ones that make the rectenna look safe. Four gigawatts is not a gentle thing to land on a coastline. We have the Archive because the last generation made decisions in good faith that cost lives anyway. Asking the town first is admirable. Asking the town *completely* is the lesson.
